Instead of a word, we have before us a metaphor.   The Shambles were places in England where butchers plyed their   trade.   A Shamble itself was, as early as the 9th Century, a wooden stool. Later, it meant a different piece of furniture: a table where butchers set out meat for sale.   From a still later and metaphorical use, Ive seen shambles used in works about naval warfare during the age of sail; the insides of wooden vessels under cannon fire looked like butcher shops. From these grisly examples we get the figurative shambles, meaning a messy, disorderly situation or place.   And thus the adjective shambolic, marked by the OED as colloquial and of recent coinagethe late 1950s! This is not mere linguistic drift (see the entry on the word fulsome) or euphemism. It gets to the heart of why English is such a flexible language. It said seven hundred and eighty dollars.† (42) This is important because the girls bought Massie a get well gift and it was 780 dollars and that was just a get well gift so they would probably pay more for a regular shirt. Also the more expensive the more fashionable you get so the more popular you get. Fashionable- Denotative- Observant of or conforming to the fashion Connotative- Cute style Again this is important because they care so much about if they are in fashion or not and if they are they will get new clothing to be in fashion and look good. â€Å" â€Å"Yeah, why not? Jean H. Baker The Lives Of American Suffragists Essay

Jean H. Baker is a teacher and author who specializes in studies that surrounds American politics in the 19th and 20th century. Along with many books regarding women she wrote, Sisters: The Lives of American Suffragists, published in 2006. Baker is an historian who has a passion to write about the leading ladies of the feminist movement, but she did not limit her writing to just this topic. Though her writing generally focused on the women’s movement, she also wrote books about certain presidents such as, Buchanan and Lincoln. Sisters, a collection of biographies, has a central purpose to describe the lives of five crucial characters of the women’s rights movement in the 1800s and early 1900s. This movement began during a period when nearly no one would allow a woman to stand up as a leader, and no one approved of any woman wearing pants; it was only acceptable for women to wear floor length dresses or skirts. Along with the strict dress code women had to abide by to remain sociable, their central duty was to be a house maiden and to care for children. Even the most monumental women in the feminist movement were expected to bear children and raise them the best they could.
